Krasnoyarsk is a modern city in the centre of Russia founded on the beautiful banks of the Yenisey River, which is the biggest river in Eurasia. The population of Krasnoyarsk is almost one million people. Krasnoyarsk is an economic, cultural and administrative centre of the enormous region. Around Krasnoyarsk people enjoy a wild and beautiful environment such as unique forms of the ancient rocks, crystal clear mountain and taiga rivers, mineral springs and lakes. Many square kilometers of the land are covered by deep conifer wood (taiga) visited only by hunters. A national park, "Stolbu", is one of the most famous recreational sites in Siberia.

Siberian Federal University was founded in 2006 following the decision of the Government of the Russian Federation. The institution integrated four large universities (Krasnoyarsk State University, Krasnoyarsk State Academy of Architecture and Civil Construction, Krasnoyarsk State Technical University, and State University of Non-Ferrous Metals and Gold) into one 43,000-student university. The combined university benefits from an investment of 17 billion rubles (over $650 million), including funding from the government of the Russian Federation, local government and businesses.
With over 43,000 students and 3,329 lecturers (including 8 Academicians and Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as 2,087 employees with Sc.D. and Ph.D. degrees), the university offers 230 programs at various university levels. Scientific development and the advancement of knowledge at Siberian Federal University are part of a rich tradition of research inherited from the parent universities. University researchers are currently involved in a number of projects conducted together with the European Space Agency, NASA, European Council, National Institute for Environmental Studies (Japan), and others.
